My First Event, at the Christmas Village

My First Event, at the Christmas Village

A day full of learning, laughter, and a whole lot of wind.

This past Saturday, I packed up my handmade creations and headed to my very first in-person event: the Christmas Village at the Shoppes at Lafayette, where I had a spot inside the ABCB Collective Booth. And let me tell you — it went even better than I imagined. I walked into the day with nerves and excitement, but I left feeling more fulfilled than I could have ever expected.

An Early Start & a Very Windy Morning

The day began bright and early with an 8am arrival and a much-needed reunion with my best friend. We immediately realized it was going to be a cold and windy day — we just didn’t realize how cold and windy.

What should have been a "normal" setup turned into a 2–2.5 hour battle against the elements. Displays tumbled over, baskets took flight, and my friend’s tent even shifted at one point. With some of her quick thinking and a lot of extra bungees, we got everything secured and finally ready by 10:30am.

A Full Day of Shoppers, Smiles & “I Love Your Stuff”

From 10am to 5pm, the event was a steady stream of people. I met so many wonderful shoppers, each walking through with warm holiday energy and supportive words. The feedback was incredibly positive, but nothing compares to the first person of the day to walk up, looked at my products, and said:

“Wow — I love your stuff.”

And then… they bought something.

Cassie told me to do my "touchdown" dance - I guess I have to work on securing one of those.

What I Learned From My First Show

Since this was my first event, and my best friend is a pro, I soaked up every lesson I could — and trust me, I learned a LOT:

  1. How to set up and break down a full booth
  2. Finding the balance between engaging and overwhelming
  3. Always hand out business cards — casually, naturally, confidently
  4. Don’t overcomplicate it. Have plans B, C, and D. (Thank you, wind, for demonstrating why.)
  5. Relax and have fun. Once the day gets flowing, the jitters fade and the joy takes over.

These are notes I’m keeping close as I move into more events next year.

Looking Ahead: More Shows, More Collaboration, More Growth

This first year in business has been about building a foundation — practicing and perfecting my crochet techniques, learning the world of online selling, studying the market, and working on my brand. And I’m proud of what I’ve built so far.

But 2025? That’s the year of stepping out from behind the screen.

More Shows

I’d love to aim for one craft fair per quarter. Seeing people interact with my creations in person was eye-opening. It’s the feeling of holding a cozy keychain or gently squeezing a crochet plushie that truly seals the deal.

More Collaborations

The ABCB Collective team and myself have already been brainstorming ways we can support one another and build more collaborative opportunities. Community and relationships are truly everything when you’re growing a small business. Stay tuned for what this Funky and Cozy duo come up with!

More Learning & Creating

I plan to keep expanding my techniques, experimenting with new designs, and bringing my craft to as many people as possible — whether in person, online, or at future community events.

If this event taught me anything, it’s that sharing your handmade work in person is powerful. It’s connection. It’s community. And it’s a reminder that every stitch, every design, every late night of crocheting — it’s all worth it.
